Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL) is making a strategic push into blockchain technology through its cloud division. The tech giant is developing a Universal Ledger, a layer-1 blockchain positioned as neutral infrastructure for financial institutions. Unlike competitors Stripe and Circle, which tie their blockchain solutions to existing products, Google aims to create an open platform accessible to banks, exchanges, and payment providers.

Rich Widmann, Google's head of Web3 strategy, emphasized the ledger's Python-based smart contracts and institutional focus. The move could establish Google as a key player in digital finance infrastructure while creating new revenue streams. The Universal Ledger represents Google's most significant blockchain initiative to date, challenging specialized crypto firms in the institutional adoption race.
